NFF set to name German new Eagles manager next week

The endless search for national team manager seems to be finally coming to an end following the Technical and Development Committee of Nigeria Football Federation recommendation to the Executive Board the candidature of Mr. Gernot Rohr for appointment as Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles.
Recall, that FCNaija.com broke the news of Rohr’s imminent appointment earlier in the week and NFF president who is already familiar with the German is happy with the recommendations of the committee and if all financial negotiations go well the former Bordeaux star could be announced as Super Eagles manager as early as next week.
Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, vice chairman of the committee, confirmed to thenff.com that the team was convinced of the former German defender’s suitability for the job after a long session with him in Abuja on Saturday.
“The committee was impressed with Mr. Rohr’s profile and current activities for the German Football Federation (DFB), so we invited him to Nigeria for exhaustive deliberations.
“He was very positive, showed great interest in the job and is ready and willing to live in Nigeria. He is also willing to work with indigenous Nigerian coaches and with the committee, and believes the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is very important to the NFF. He swayed the committee with his calmness, good knowledge of the African terrain, focus and maturity.”
Rohr, 63, played for FC Girondins Bordeaux in France as a defender and as coach, took the team to the UEFA Cup final in 1996 before they lost to Bayern Munich of Germany.
He also coached top Tunisian club, Etoile du Sahel and FC Nantes before managing the National Teams of Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso. He was shortlisted for the job of Head Coach of Guinea only last month.
“Mr. Rohr has the character and confidence to take the Super Eagles to new heights of excellence. He has rich knowledge of both sub –Saharan and North African terrains and truly impressed the committee.
“Our job is to recommend him to the Board, which we have done. The NFF legal department is working on the final draft of the contract but we have agreed on a range of terms and conditions.
“The Secretariat will present the full contract to Mr. Rohr in the following days and the Executive Board will contact Mr. Rohr for the final negotiations,” said Fresh.

The match which was originally played yesterday was not completed due to the heavy rain at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. Although the fist half was completed (which ended 0-0), the unfriendly weather stopped the kickoff of the second half which led to the match to be rescheduled for today by 8am.

The two teams filed out for the match this morning and proceedings got underway from the 46th minute of the second half. Enyimba took a well deserved lead in the 47th minute through Chukwude from a Joseph Osadiaye header after poor defending from the Rivers United backline.

The goal and memories of the Fifty thousand dollars promised to them by Governor Nyesom Wike if they win the match woke Rivers United from their slumber and they pressed Enyimba so hard that the Aba side spent most time in their own half defending.

But things took an awkward turn after the referee awarded a Penalty to Enyimba which was well resisted by players and officials of Rivers United. The players got angry because the referee ( Mrs Folusho Ajayi from Oyo State) refused to award a free kick to Rivers United after a clear foul on Ayobami minutes before the referee awarded the penalty.

This lead to High ranking officials of Rivers United ordering the players not to continue the match and also to leave the pitch.

SAMM AUDU PETITIONS POLICE AGAINST NFF BOSS AFTER DEATH THREAT

Samm Audu of AfricanFootball.com has lodged a formal petition with the FCT police command against the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick after an alleged supporter threatened his life.

Samm Audu filed his protest accompanied by his lawyer Ahmed Maiwada and Principal Counsel of Wadata Chambers Friday afternoon.

One Chief Ayeri issued a death threat against Samm Audu after alleging that the award-winning journalist of 30 years standing has been publishing “lies” against a fellow “Itsekiri man”.

In the petition, the solicitors declared: “That our client (Samm Audu) is of the firm belief that Chief Ayeri was acting on behalf of Amaju Pinnick and he fears that his life is now under clear and present danger and threat.”

The lawyers therefore called on the police to launch a thorough investigation against this unequivocal threat to his life.

Lionel Messi and his father handed 21-month prison sentence in Spain for tax fraud

Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud.
His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.
They also face millions of euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.
However, neither man is expected to serve time in jail.
Under the Spanish system, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation.
The footballer and his father were found guilty of three counts of tax fraud in Wednesday's ruling by the court in Barcelona.
As well as the jail terms, Messi was fined about €2m and his father €1.5m. They made a voluntary €5m "corrective payment", equal to the alleged unpaid tax plus interest, in August 2013.
The sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court.
