Harry Redknapp believes the emergence of Tottenham starlet Dele Alli has pushed Theo Walcott’s career to a crossroads.
Arsenal winger Walcott is one of the most experienced members of Roy Hodgson’s current England squad and he has been included in the 24-man party to face Germany and Holland in the forthcoming friendlies. But the 27-year-old is far from assured a place in Hodgson’s squad for this summer’s European Championships and Redknapp says now is the time for Walcott to step up.
“I’ve always liked Theo as a player but he’s at the crossroads now and needs to start producing on a regular basis,” Redknapp told the Telegraph.
“He doesn’t even get in the Arsenal team nowadays. At Old Trafford the other week I thought he’d murder that United defence but he barely got a kick.
“He’s useful as an impact player but players like [Dele] Alli and [Ross] Barkley have flown past him and are threatening to leave him out in the cold.”
Walcott has scored just four goals in 22 Premier League appearances for the Gunners and former Spurs boss Redknapp believes the player is in danger of missing out on a place at Euro 2016, especially due to the impact that Alli has made in his debut season at White Hart Lane.
“Dele Alli is the most exciting England youngster for a long time and we should be building a team around him,” added Redknapp.
“Dele and Ross Barkley are two fantastic young talents and whatever system I played I’d find a way of getting them in the team. Let them roam free and create havoc against defenders.”
