Colombia went ahead early from a Cristian Zapatagoal in the 8th minute, his first international goal coming off a volley from a corner kick.
James Rodriguez then doubled the lead at 42 minutes after Colombia was awarded a penalty kick for a handball by DeAndre Yedlin inside the 18-yard box. Then Colombian captain stepped up to the spot with confidence and put it well beyond U.S. goalkeeper.
Alejandro Bedoya was given a yellow card in the 57th minute for the U.S. for his late challenge.
The U.S. had their best chance in the 58th minute from a corner kick, but Geoff Cameron's header was cleared by the Colombian defense.
Cristian Zapata and Edwin Cardona were among Colombia’s best, along with Caudardo.
Rising U.S. players Darlington Nagbe and Christian Pulisic played late, but neither player made an impact.
The loss will make it challenging for the U.S. to progress in their competitive group which also features Paraguay and Costa Rica.
Colombia, who is currently ranked number three in the world, has some world-class names in its lineup, including captain James Rodriguez and Juventus Midfielder Juan Cuadrado. But some of its biggest names including Radamel Falcao, Jackson Martinez and Teofilo Gutierrez will be absent.
