SM Caen came from behind to beat ESTAC Troyes 2-1 at the Stade Michel-d'Ornano on Saturday and leave the visitors on the brink of being relegated.
SM Caen 2 - 1 ESTAC Troyes
Xavier Thiago put Troyes ahead midway through the first half in Normandy only for Alaeddine Yahia to equalise 10 minutes before the interval. Ronny Rodelin then netted the winner for Caen in the 54th minute as Patrice Garande's side bounced back from last weekend's 1-0 loss to GFC Ajaccio in Corsica.
Caen remain in touch with the European places while Troyes have now suffered five consecutive defeats and their inevitable return to the second tier will be confirmed on Sunday if Gazélec win away in Nice.
Troyes were looking to bounce back from their chastening 9-0 home defeat to champions Paris Saint-Germain last weekend and they got off to a great start, taking the lead in the 22nd minute. Brazilian midfielder Xavier Thiago rose above Rodelin to head a left-wing corner past Rémy Vercoutre.
Turnaround
However, Caen had taken four points off Stade Rennais FC and AS Monaco in their previous two games and they did not take long to get back on level terms. After Matthieu Dreyer turned an Andy Delort shot around the post, captain Julien Féret swung in the resulting corner and defender Yahia powerfully headed home.
The turnaround was complete when Caen got their second goal early in the second half. Former Lille winger Rodelin was the hero, scoring his eighth goal of the season when he got in front of Rincon to head in a cross from deep by Jordan Leborgne, pushing Troyes further towards the trapdoor in the process.
