Togo head coach Claude Le Roy has been sentenced to two years in jail for his involvement in fraudulent activities relating to his time as manager French club of Racing Strasbourg between 1998 and 2003.
The 68-year-old Leroy has been accused of overseeing a system that allowed the club owners to be involved in the transfer of players out of the club, which is not allowed in France.
Leroy, who has had stints as coach of Cameroon, Senegal, DR Congo and Congo, has denied any knowledge that he knew the transfers were illegal at the time.
However, Leroy’s statement of defence has clearly not convinced the prosecution who are still pressing for the jail term of the coach.
The prosecutor, Sébastien Hauger, said in his submissions: “We’re in a little world of ultra-privileged stirring hundreds of thousands of francs. If this is a grey area then we forget that there are regulations governing transfers.”
Former president of RC Strasbourg, Patrick Proisy, has also been implicated in the case and could face a jail term of up to three years.
