Rivers United are now breathing down the necks of Nigeria league leaders Enugu Rangers after they won their third straight game on Wednesday by beating Wikki Tourists 1-0 in Port Harcourt. Rangers lost 2-1 to Sunshine Stars in Akure, also on Wednesday.
Both Rivers United and Rangers are now on 28 points and the same goals difference of +5, but the Port Harcourt club have scored fewer goals than Rangers.
It was a match day when the front runners slipped – third-placed Abia Warriors fell 3-2 at Nasarawa United and Lobi Stars crashed 1-0 at FC IfeanyiUbah.
Rivers United match winner against fellow front runners Wikki was Gabriel Olalekan, who headed home off a free kick in the 26th minute.
