Iceland held Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their first ever game at the Euro finals on Thursday night after an impressive effort from the tournament newcomers against the mighty Cristiano Ronaldo and co.
Gylfi Sigurdsson could easily have put Iceland in front after just a few minutes, seeing his effort saved by Rui Patricio. Nani then had a header well saved at close range from Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson, who had a mixed evening.
Nani soon erased the bad miss from his memory with the opening goal after being found in the penalty area by Andre Gomes. But the lead wasn't to last and Birki Bjarnason struck back after the half-time interval with only Iceland's second shot on target.
It was dreadful defending from Portugal, who ultimately underwhelmed on the day.
Portugal had a flurry of free-kicks in the closing stages but Iceland remained resolute at the back, even getting a little lucky when Ronaldo sent a towering header straight at a grateful Halldorsson with just five minutes to go
Austria, who had been labelled by many as a dark horse before the competition began, were dominant in the opening stages and almost scored inside the first 30 seconds when Bayern Munich star David Alaba struck the post.
The deadlock was broken just after the hour mark when Adam Szalai and Laszlo Kleinheisler combined neatly, with the former eventually poking the ball home. Aleksandar Dragovic was then later given his marching orders after a second caution, leaving Austria with a mountain to climb.
As it was, Hungary finished the job in the closing stages through Zoltan Stieber's calm and composed finish after a swift counter attack.
