Euro 2016 Wednesday Roundup: France Leave it Late Yet Again While Slovakia Earn First Win

France have taken maximum points from their first games of Euro 2016 after very late goals from Antoine Griezmann and Dimitri Payet spared the host nation's blushes against a plucky Albania in Marseille's iconic Stade Velodrome.

Didier Deschamps had chosen to leave Griezmann as well as Paul Pogba out of the starting line-up after a disappointing opening performance last week. But, despite the changes, France were rather poor in the first half and Albania more than held their own.

France made a much better start to the second half after Pogba came on, with higher tempo and tighter pressing. It was Albania who came closest, though, hitting the post through Ledian Memushaj.

Les Bleus turned up the pressure - Olivier Giroud hit the post at the other end - but were guilty of missing countless opportunities until Griezmann finally put a header on target to break Albanian hearts, before Payet curled in a second to seal the result in the 95th minute.

Elsewhere in Group A, Romania held Switzerland to a 1-1 draw in Paris.

Having taken confidence from their performance in the tournament opener against France, the Romanians employed productive similar tactics and took the lead inside the first 20 minutes as Bogdan Stancu converted a second penalty in as many games.

Haris Seferovic was guilty of being profligate in front of the goal for the Swiss in their first game and was at it again in this one, missing a couple of good opportunities. Switzerland did eventually draw back level when Admir Mehmedi equalised with a clinical finish shortly before the hour mark

In the day's earliest kick-off, an impressive Slovakia earned their first ever win in the European Championship after brushing aside the challenge of Russia in Group B and putting themselves in a good position to qualify for the last 16.

Jan Kozak's side were totally dominant in the first half and took a deserved 2-0 lead into the half-time interval. Vladimir Weiss opened the scoring after half an hour, and then turned provider for Marek Hamsik and arguably the goal of the tournament so far - a stunning strike that cannoned in off the far post.

Russia fought back in the closing stages and got back into the game when Denis Glushakov headed in after a well-worked team move, but it proved to be too little too late.

Euro 2016 will continue on Thursday when England and Wales face off in Lens, followed by clashes between Ukraine and Northern Ireland, and Germany and Poland.
