Louis van Gaal says captain Wayne Rooney is back in training but not ready to play for Manchester United's first team as the manager grapples with a welcome selection problem.
Rooney, who has been out of action since 13 February with a knee problem, will not feature against Tottenham in the Premier League on Monday morning (AEST).
Instead, the 30-year-old forward must play with United's development side as he seeks to regain match sharpness ahead of the final weeks of the league season and EURO 2016.
"He's playing for the under-21s," Van Gaal told a news conference on Friday.
"His recovery is going very well.
"He has trained with us two times, but he has to build up his fitness."
