EPL Preview: Manchester City v Manchester United

Manchester City can achieve something they have not managed since 1955 against Manchester United in Sunday’s derby at the Etihad Stadium.

Team news

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany misses out with a recurrence of a calf injury he suffered against Dynamo Kiev in midweek, while Nicolas Otamendi is a doubt with a dead leg sustained in the same game.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have Ashley Young and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson back in contention, but Ander Herrera could again miss out with a groin injury that forced him to miss Thursday’s Europa League game against Liverpool.
Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday is at 4pm.

Stats

  • Manchester City have won four and lost just one of the last six Premier League meetings with Manchester United.
  • Sergio Aguero has scored seven goals in seven Premier League games against Manchester United. Only five players have scored more against the Red Devils in Premier League history (Ferdinand, Henry, Gerrard & Fowler with eight and Shearer with 10).
  • Sergio Aguero needs one goal to equal the most goals scored by a player in Premier League Manchester derbies and go level with Wayne Rooney (8). If he scores in this game then Aguero would have managed that in eight games, while Rooney took 16 derbies to do that.
  • Aguero has scored 11 goals in his last eight Premier League appearances at the Etihad Stadium.
  • There were just two shots on target in this fixture back in October and 12 shots overall. The latter figure is the second lowest in any Premier League game this season.
  • Man Utd failed to muster a single shot in the first half of a Premier League game for the first time since 2003-04 (including blocked) when these two sides met at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
  • Manuel Pellegrini could become the first Manchester City manager to win four Premier League Manchester derbies this weekend. The last City manager to win four Manchester derbies in the league was Joe Mercer in 1970 (won five in total).
  • Manchester United haven’t lost three successive league games away at Manchester City since 1955 (lost four in a row then).
  • However, United have won just one of their last eight Premier League away games (W1 D3 L4).
  • Marcus Rashford has been involved in three of Man Utd’s last four league goals (two goals, one assist).
