Nigeria’s league champions Enyimba have moved a step closer to the second round of the CAF Champions League following a comprehensive 5-1 win over Vital’O of Burundi at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Stephen Chukwude and star man Mfon Udoh got two goals apiece for a 4-0 lead before Hussein Shaban grabbed a 76th minute consolation for the away side but former Nasarawa United midfielder Ugochukwu Leonard made it a more comprehensive 5-1 win for Enyimba.
The second leg takes place in Bujumbura in a fortnight with Vital’O needing at least four unreplied goals to progress to the next round at the expense of Enyimba. The winner faces the winner of the tie between Olympique Khouribga of Morocco and Tunisian side Etoile Du Sahel.
Also Warri Wolves lost 0-1 to visiting El-Merrikh of Sudan. Abdo Gaber’s strike earned the Sudanese side a valuable win against the Seasiders who walked over Club de Sporting de Praia Cruz in the preliminary stage.
Speaking to Soccer60.com, coach Nieketien said "I hope we can make the most of the opportunity that will come our way in the second leg,”.
“I'm optimistic that we can get the required result to progress to the next round in Sudan.
“We have to improve on converting those chances and work on our pace. If they can score here in Warri then we can also score goals there that can earn us a win to progress,” he concluded.
El-Merreikh had their best performance in the Caf Champions League in 2015, when they reached the semifinal stage.
In the CAF confederation cup Nasarawa united recorded a slim 1:0 win over CS Constantine of Algeria at the Abuja National Stadium .
